(AP) - Newark authorities say a teenager driving astolen car crashed into another vehicle after fleeing a trafficstop, killing a 15-year-old passenger and seriously injuringanother teen in the car.
Newark Police Det. Todd McClendon says the crash occurred lateFriday night, when a city officer on patrol noticed a car reportedstolen out of Elizabeth and tried to stop it. However, the17-year-old driver - whose name was not disclosed - fled the scene.
A short time later, the driver ran a red light and crashed intoanother vehicle, McClendon said. Police were not pursuing the carat the time.
Malik Proctor of Newark, who was in the rear seat, waspronounced dead at the scene. Another backseat passenger, a17-year-old boy, was in critical but stable condition in UniversityHospital on Saturday.
