A hundred golfers today raised tens of thousands of dollars at the Bella Vista Country Club in Marlboro to help fight a rare form of muscular dystrophy.
One amateur golfer will win $13,000, the largest purse ever offered according to organizers. But the focus is on the $60,000 raised for JAR of Hope, a charity founded by a Monmouth County dad James Raffone, whose son is battling the rare disease.
There's no cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, an aggressive form of the disease mainly affecting boys that is often fatal before they turn 21. There are only around 300,000 cases in the world -- 20,000 here in the states and just a handful in New Jersey, which is why James says raising awareness of this disease is so important.
“We fight every day, 24/7, to try and not only raise awareness but to raise funds to move the science forward and find a cure for this disease or at least the therapy to slow it down because children who suffer from this disease by the age of 15 are basically quadriplegics,” says Raffone.
It’s the second golf outing in a month for the charity. They will have raised $160,000, but an even bigger event is planned for the spring.
Raffone says in March, they plan on dropping 2,000 golf balls from a helicopter over a green - each ball purchased with a $1,000 donation. The first ball in the hole will win a $250,000 prize -- the rest of the money will go back to JAR of Hope, which is currently funding a study of several patients in New Jersey.
