Pesticide contamination in the soil at a Paramus middle school is worse that originally thought, and parents are demanding answers.
West Brook?s mayor closed the West Brook Middle School last week so the soil could be tested for pesticides. The school will now remain closed after the Department of Environmental Protection revealed the soil contains levels of pesticides 10 times higher than federal regulations allow.
The soil has been outside the school since December. Tests revealed that the soil is contaminated with three banned chemicals, including Chlordane, a termite pesticide. Parents are angry the school district took months to notify them of the contamination.
Many parents are demanding Superintendent Janice Dime resign over the handling of the situation.
Meanwhile, students will finish out the year at Bergen Community College. The district has scheduled a public meeting on the issue for June 11.
