A history teacher in Ocean County scored the nearly impossible task of getting two tickets to the Broadway show “Hamilton” thanks to the generosity of his students.
New Egypt High School teacher Tom Corby’s students filmed the surprise and posted it on social media.
"He's been entering the lottery for as long as I can remember…and every day he would get the notification that he hasn't won,” says student Hanna Downs. “So we decided to make his dream come true and buy him his tickets ourselves."
The now-viral in-class reaction video even got the attention of “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manual Miranda, who tweeted "Making your teacher cry happy tears is SO many bonus points for The Good Place. Great job Hanna, great job kids. Enjoy, Mr. Corby.”
“It’s an incredible feeling knowing that after all this time they’re willing to do something like this for me. It says a lot about them,” Corby says.
But the students say that it was the least they could do for Corby, who is one of the school’s most beloved teachers.
"He cares about every single student. He's really able to relate to every student,” says student Ellie Witham. “I don't think there's a student that's come through these doors…who hasn't had a good relationship with him as a person and as a teacher."
While News 12 New Jersey was working on this story, Corby received another surprise – a phone call from the show’s producers inviting him backstage after the show.
The students wouldn't say exactly how much money they pooled together for the tickets, only saying that it cost "a lot.” Corby says he will be taking his wife to the show.
