Original story below:

World Elite Sumo (WES), the first independent professional sumo league established outside of Japan in 800 years, announced on Wednesday the first nine competitors for its inaugural North American tournament.

The single-elimination, 12-man event will be held at the Prudential Center. The historic card marks a major shift for the ancient sport, blending traditional discipline with modern "fight-night" production.

"We are assembling a lineup of elite professional sumo wrestling athletes who will fight that night until there is only one champion left standing in the center of the dohyo," said Abdelrahman "Sandstorm" Shalan, CEO of WES and a Waldwick resident.

Shalan, 33, is a trailblazer in the sport as the first sumo wrestler from the Middle East and Africa. A native of Egypt, he is among the athletes slated to compete in the Newark tournament. He is widely recognized for his tsuki/oshi (thrusting and pushing) fighting style.

The tournament will feature a unique bracket-style format. All matches will be contested in a best-of-three series to increase competitive stakes. The opening stage will see 12 fighters battle for six advancing spots. Two "wild card" slots will be awarded to losing fighters who demonstrate exceptional performance, rounding out an eight-man quarterfinal.

The competition will then proceed through single-elimination semifinals and a championship final to crown a single winner by the end of the night.

Beyond the wrestling, the event promises an immersive spectacle featuring live taiko drumming and dramatic athlete entrances.

Tickets are currently on sale through Ticketmaster and the Prudential Center website.
