A stretch of Main Street in Bound Brook reopened Thursday, a month and a day after a massive fire tore through five buildings – causing $52 million in damage.
The street was originally supposed to open Wednesday, but Mayor Robert Fazen said that he was concerned about debris.
Fazen said that after meeting with the contractor, they wanted better protection for the road between John and Drake streets before continuing demolition while cars pass through. Four hours of cleaning debris took place this morning.

The opening of the road means a tremendous amount to local workers and people who use Main Street. Some say it has really hurt business.
The mayor says they plan to build a wooden wall on the side of the building to prevent debris from falling into the street.
The mayor says they passed an ordinance Tuesday night that provides more security than required to prevent a fire like this from happening again.
There will be 24/7 security for every building or partial construction that has flammable materials on it from now on.
