Stratford officials have announced an increase in fines for individuals caught riding three-wheel and four-wheel all-terrain motor vehicles on streets, sidewalks and other public areas.

The fine for operating ATVs and other vehicles that are not street-legal in these prohibited zones can now reach up to $2,000.

The newly approved ordinance states, any person who operates any motorized recreational vehicle in violation will be fined $1,000 for a first violation, $1,500 for a second and $2,000 for a third or subsequent violation.

The Town Council voted on the change unanimously last week.

Stratford residents say they are glad to know the town is actively working to deter illegal street takeovers but are unsure whether it will work.

"Maybe they'll think twice, and then maybe not because it's so much fun," said a resident.

The new ordinance also allows police to seize the illegal vehicles and bans gas station from the sale of gasoline for illegal purposes, like fueling ATV's.

Additionally, the use of such vehicles is strictly forbidden on beaches, dunes and within parks in Stratford.

Stratford police say they will continue to focus on the issue but would also like to see more change from the state Legislature.

The new policy is set to go into effect on March 12.
