New Jersey state health officials have confirmed that one person is in quarantine in Essex County after recently arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport from China.

That person is not a New Jersey resident. Officials say that the traveler did not show any symptoms of the virus, but did travel to Hubei Province. Wuhan – the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak – is in that province.

The person will have to be quarantined for 14 days as a precaution.

The news comes as China announces that deaths from the virus have risen by 73 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths in the country past 200. There are over 28,000 cases of coronavirus worldwide – including 11 cases in the United States. There are no confirmed cases in New Jersey.

Symptoms of the illness include a fever, cough and shortness of breath. Symptoms may take up to two weeks to manifest.

Local health officials can now confirm cases of coronavirus themselves instead of waiting for word from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC plans to distribute 400 test kits for the virus. A kit can cover up to 800 patient samples.

The test can detect the virus from nasal or oral swaps. The kits will be split between domestic and international labs.
