Disturbing details involving the off-duty Newark police lieutenant accused of killing his estranged wife and wounding another man in Jefferson Township have come to light.
The shooting happened Sunday around 11:20 p.m. outside a home on Mirror Place.
According to authorities, police officers responded to reports of a woman’s body lying on the front porch steps of the home.
According to NJ Advanced Media, John Formisano, 49, filed for divorce from his wife about a month ago.
Court documents also show he called the house on Mirror Place where his wife, 37-year-old Christine Solaro, lived.
She and a 40-year-old man locked themselves inside a bedroom.
Reports say Formisano told police that when he saw the other man, he "blacked out" and started shooting.
Formisano was arrested several hours later, in a parking lot in Livingston. It is believed Formisano’s parents live in the town. Officials say the gun believed to have been used in the killing was found inside of Formisano’s vehicle.
Formisano is charged with murder, attempted murder and endangering the welfare of a child, along with other charges.
The couple's two children were inside the home at the time.
They were not hurt.
The man has not been identified.
