The Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced on Wednesday that 36 alleged members of two rival Brownsville-based gangs have been charged.

“Some of the most violent criminals in our city," said Tisch.

The DA’s office says that for the last three years, members of the WOOO and CHOO gangs have terrorized the Brownsville community with at least 36 shootings.

“Many of these shootings took place where there were young children, in playgrounds, in the neighborhood, there were bystanders," said Gonzalez.

Of those shootings, 11 people were hurt. Tahriq Thompson, 34, was killed in June 2025 at Riverdale Towers.

“East New York and Brownsville often lead this city in gun violence, and this is why NYPD and the Brooklyn DA's office is focusing so much attention there," said Gonzalez.

According to the NYPD, data shootings are down this year in Brooklyn compared to this time last year. But concerns about the age of shooters continue. Of the 36 gang members arrested in the takedown, 26 of them were teens.
