The second man accused in the fatal shooting of a 7-month-old girl in Bushwick appeared for his arraignment Wednesday at Brooklyn Criminal Court.
Amuri Greene, 21, pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges in connection to the shooting that killed 7-month-old Kaori Patterson-Moore and wounded her 2-year-old brother in the back.
“We allege that this defendant shot a firearm at least two times at two infant children, in broad daylight, on a public street here in Brooklyn, in the middle of a shopping district,” prosecutors told the court.
On April 1, Greene allegedly opened fire into a crowd on Moore and Humboldt streets in Bushwick.
Investigators said Greene took off on the back of a moped with 18-year-old Matthew Rodriguez, then the two men crashed into oncoming traffic.
Greene was taken to the hospital. Prosecutors told the court that Greene gave EMTs a false name.
Greene entered the courtroom with crutches, a bandaged left foot, and ankle shackles. His defense attorneys asked the judge to prevent news crews from photographing or recording Greene until he was seated.
Wednesday's arraignment came one day after Rodriguez was escorted out of the NYPD’s 90th precinct in handcuffs. He told reporters that he did not know Greene would fire the gun.
“I didn’t know!” Rodriguez yelled on Tuesday. “I promise, I promise I didn’t know! I didn’t know [Greene] was going to do that. I did not know he was going to pull the trigger!”
Investigators said the two young victims were not the intended targets, and the shooting may have been the result of “beef over drill rap.”
“It was an unspeakable tragedy, one motivated by and perpetrated by gangs,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Wednesday.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzlez promised to get justice for the victim’s family.
“We will continue to fight for this family, and we will continue to fight to make sure that no family ever has to go through what this family went through,” Gonzalez said.
Greene is due back in court on June 10, which is the same day that Rodriguez is also scheduled to appear again.
