A man charged in a deadly hit-and-run boat crash on a Passaic County lake two years ago has been released from jail and placed on house arrest.
A state judge approved the move Tuesday after county prosecutors sought to keep Shawn Kelly detained until his trial. They claimed that the 44-year-old Paramus man was a flight risk.
Kelly faces several charges in the Labor Day 2016 crash on Greenwood Lake, including death by vessel and leaving the scene of an accident.
One person was killed and several others injured in the crash. Edwin Lane died a few weeks after the crash. His injuries included a fractured skull from hitting his head on a metal railing and a broken collar bone.
Police have said 72-year-old Lane, his wife and another couple were headed back to Lane's dock when a powerboat smashed into them.
