Nearly 5,000 guns turned in during New Jersey’s gun buyback program have been melted down and turned into steel rods.
The guns were melted and reshaped at a facility in Sayreville. The rods will be used in reinforcements for New Jersey’s roads and buildings.
The program, which was held in Newark, Trenton and Camden, netted 4,775 guns, including 129 that were illegal to own in the state.
People were able to turn in their guns, no questions asked, in exchange for cash.
