Tens of thousands of New Jersey residents will be traveling by road ahead of this Thanksgiving holiday.
As New Jersey residents pack their cars and head out on the roads, state police have issued some safety tips to ensure everyone gets to their destinations safely.
Drivers are urged to check the fluids in their vehicles, check the tire pressure and fill up their gas tanks. They should also make sure their mobile devices are fully charged, have a flashlight with new batteries and have bottles of water and nonperishable snacks.
Drivers are also reminded not to drive drowsy or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“Symptoms of driving tired are similar to those of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Use service areas to rest, stretch your legs or grab a cup of coffee,” police wrote in a statement.
State police officials say that there will be more than 100 additional troopers out on patrol during the holiday period. The patrols will enforce speed limits and monitor for aggressive or distracted driving.
“Safety starts with sober driving, so we ask that you do your part by making responsible choices this holiday. Our goal is zero crash fatalities—not just on holidays, but every day,” State Police Superintendent Col. Patrick Callahan wrote.
The Thanksgiving holiday period begins on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and ends on Monday at 6 a.m.
