The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has closed part of Jersey Avenue between Jersey City and Hoboken for construction.
It's expected to last months and impact drivers particularly during commuting hours.
Residents and drivers are asked to plan ahead for delays.
The road will be closed between 18th Street in Jersey City to Harrison Street in Hoboken. It's closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic 24 hours a day.
The road is being closed for the Rebuild by Design Hudson River Project's floodgate.
While work continues, traffic entering and exiting Hoboken will be detoured to Grove Street and Marin Boulevard/ Henderson Street. Trucks are also being redirected.
The project is expected to fully close lanes for one month before one southbound lane is expected to reopen for vehicles exiting Hoboken.
Residents are asked to use mass transit if possible and to use different routes to enter and exit the cities.
Jersey Avenue is scheduled to reopen fully by the Fourth of July.
Hoboken police officers will be on site from 8 a.m. to midnight. Jersey City police officers will be on site 24/7 during the project.
