Grant applications now open for businesses impacted by I-80 closures
The Route 80 Business Assistance Grant Program just opened, and already, hundreds of applications have been submitted.
Closures continue in Morris County as crews work to repair sinkholes on Interstate 80. The latest timeline has two westbound lanes opening at the beginning of May.
Wharton businesses have felt losses amid the closures, but some relief is in sight.
The Route 80 Business Assistance Grant Program just opened, and already, hundreds of applications have been submitted. As of Thursday night, over 350 businesses have applied, according to officials.
"Important for those hit hardest in Wharton. We want to make sure opportunity is there for them first," said Republican Assemblywoman Aura K. Dunn.
The grant continues until funds are expended. There is a $5 million allotment from the state.

Dunn says the program is on track to get approvals starting Friday.
Pops Bagel Shop filled out an application as soon as it opened. The grants from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority range from $1,000 to $15,000.

“We're hoping for the maximum, of course, $15.000. Our losses are a lot more substantial than that, but any little bit helps," said owner Yazan Muheisen.
The business is down 20-30%, but they've kept doors open, according to Muheisen.
La Forchetta has also seen a drop in business.
"Slow, to the point we used to be open seven days. Now we're closed Mondays," said owner Norberto Berganza.
Even though March was difficult, they don't qualify for the grant after a successful start to 2025.
"I hope they open in two weeks, and I hope we'll get better and better every day, to the point maybe we don't have to apply for everything," said Berganza.
Currently, only businesses that meet requirements within five miles of the closures can apply.
Dunn urges businesses to apply for the grant as soon as possible, and for those that don't qualify, reach out to the local government.
