Lawmakers in Trenton are tossing around a bill to extend Legislature terms.
Under the proposal, state Senate terms would be extended to five years from four. Assembly members would serve under a more unusual system, with two and three-year terms alternating each re-election.
State senators in support of the legislation feel politicians could focus more on the task at hand and less on re-election.
"Having more time between election cycles would allow legislators to cast aside political calculations and instead focus on policy and the merits of legislation," says Sen. Nicholas Scutari (D-22nd District).
Supporters say longer term limits means fewer elections, which could save the state money as it deals with crippling fiscal problems.
New Jersey's constitution would have to be changed in order to extend the terms, which means if the legislation moves forward it will ultimately have to be voted on and approved by voters.
