About 200 workers at the Newark-based Star-Ledger have been asked to take buyouts by Oct. 1.
The newspaper is "on life support," according to its publisher.
The buyout reportedly includes a year severance and health benefits. The announcement was met with a sense of panic, according to employees.
"It was almost like the last helicopter out of Saigon," says DVD columnist Steve Hedgepeth. "People are really, really upset."
Employees opting not to take the buyout will be out of a job by the end of the year. The newspaper's future is uncertain and the possibility of it being sold is not out of the question.
