(08/24/07) SPRING LAKE ? Residents in Spring Lake hoping to enjoy a late-summer visit to the beach Friday were not disappointed.

Often, after heavy rains, beaches in the area are closed. Storm water from the Wreck Pond discharge pipe has typically raised bacteria levels in the ocean following rainy weather. The heightened bacteria levels are usually caused by storm water and goose droppings in the pond.

However, to the delight of beachgoers, the cycle of heavy rains and beach closures did not repeat itself Friday. Beaches are open, allowing residents to enjoy one of the final days of summer on the sand and in the water.
