All schools in South Brunswick will remain closed for the rest of the week after it was learned that someone in the township may have been exposed to the coronavirus.
No students are believed to have contracted the virus, but schools were closed on Wednesday as a precaution.
“This is definitely one of those occasions where being more safe than sorry is a necessity,” Superintendent Scott Fedder said in a statement. “We will use this time wisely in sanitizing and disinfecting our schools.”
The decision to close to schools was made after police heard about a part in Princeton. Two people from South Brunswick recently attended that party, which also included guests who were at the Biogen conference in Boston. That conference has been linked to positive cases of coronavirus – including one patient from New Jersey.
News 12 New Jersey spoke with some parents who say that they are glad that the schools are taking precautions. But say that it will be harder for those parents who have children in the elementary schools.
“For the older kids…they can stay home by themselves,” says mother Sifat Rizvi. “They can do their school work online. Everything is online nowadays. It’s not difficult.”
East Brunswick schools also made the decision to close for the week after a resident from the town contracted the illness.
News 12 asked Gov. Phil Murphy if the state’s public schools should be shut down like colleges around the state have decided. He said that the decision would be made on a case-by-case basis.
“Our objective again is to be fact-based, be transparent, and to be ahead of this as humanly possible. That goes for schools and that goes for communities,” the governor said.
South Brunswick schools will treat the closures as snow days.
