A priest from Rumson who stole thousands from his parish is now a free man.
Reverend Joseph Hughes admitted stealing $75,000 from Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church. He was sentenced to five years in prison, but was released after only serving six months. Many call Hughes? early release a slap on the wrist. However, a panel of judges agreed with Hughes? lawyer and released him into the state?s Intensive Supervision Program (ISP). In ISP, Hughes will have at least 20 visits with his probation officer each month. He must also obey a curfew, perform community service and pay restitution.
The NJ Judiciary says at least 20 percent of Hughes? Social Security and pension will go back to the church. His boat and condo in Florida will also be sold to pay back Holy Cross. While Hughes admitted stealing $75,000 from the church, a civil agreement he signed with the church says he owes more than $2 million.
