3h agoThe Smithtown superintendent of schools has responded to the allegations that a Smithtown High School East teacher was fired for being an ally to the LGBTQ community.
On Tuesday, former teacher Josh Tilton claimed in an Instagram post that he was denied tenure because of his personal beliefs and partnership with the LGBTQ community.
He also claims an LGBTQ-friendly mural he created with his students was painted over once he was no longer at the building.
“It was immediately covered up. There was no effort to even explain anything... That honestly really bothered me because so many people loved him,” said Smithtown High School East senior Jupiter Mamone.
The Superintendent Dr. Mark Secaur gave a statement about the controversy to News 12.
“Although the district will not comment on a former employee, it is important to know that the claims this individual is making are extremely concerning and inaccurate. It is unfortunate that he is trying to tarnish our reputation as the district has been and will continue to be strong advocates for all our students including our LGBTQ population,” said Secaur.
