July 27 marked National New Jersey Day, according to the website National Day Calendar.
The holiday played out mostly on social media. NJGov, the state’s official Twitter feed, reminded everyone about a few things invented in New Jersey - including the light bulb, transistors, electric guitars and motion pictures. Other people tweeted pictures of beautiful New Jersey places and classic Jersey foods like pizza and pork roll.
NorthJersey.com reporter Terrance McDonald tweeted out headlines about politicians taking bribes, cash stuffed into paper bags and coffee cups and other New Jersey corruption incidents.
The U.S. Naval Institute reminded everyone that the most decorated battleship in naval history is the USS New Jersey.
Melanin Monroe started a Twitter thread highlighting the massive amount of Black female musicians and other artists from New Jersey, such as Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, Dionne Warwick, Sza, and Sarah Vaughn.
News 12 New Jersey’s Brian Donohue says that seeing all of the traffic on Twitter surrounding New Jersey reminded him of how the late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain once described the Garden State. Bourdain said that New Jersey is “a cultural petri dish which regularly issues forth greatness."
July 27 was chosen somewhat arbitrarily by the folks at NationalDayCalendar.com. But New Jersey does have an official New Jersey Day on June 24, marking the date it was first made a British colony.
