State Sen. Raymond Lesniak returned to his Elizabeth home Monday after police say his house was robbed early Saturday morning.
Authorities say the senator was asleep in his bed when two men broke into his home through a basement window. During the investigation since the incident, officers recovered a screwdriver in Lesniak's backyard they believe was used to open the window.
According to Lesniak, the two men rummaged through his home before entering his bedroom. He woke up to a man standing over him and another man across the room saying, "Shoot him." Lesniak says the robbers told him over and over again that they are good people and wouldn't harm him if he didn't harm them.
The thieves stole $600 cash, a cell phone and the keys to Lesniak's Lexus, though they left the car behind. The senator says he forgot to set his home alarm system Saturday night. Lesniak didn't get a good look at the suspects, though Elizabeth police say they are following some leads.
