The soil is clean and the classrooms are filled at a middle school in Paramus Wednesday.
The West Brook Middle School got a clean bill of health prior to the students? return.
The building had to be closed in May, prior to the end of the school year, due to soil being contaminated with pesticides. The students had to finish their classes at Bergen Community College. The town spent the summer cleaning up the soil and conducting tests to make sure the school, inside and outside, was ready for the students in September.
The Board of Education and the borough are now named in four lawsuits. Paramus Mayor James Tedesco says two of the suits are class action, filed by retired and present teachers. The other two are single suits filed by families of students, Tedesco says.
Meanwhile, Paramus School Superintendent Janice Dime is no longer working, but will continue to be paid until her contract expires in June. Dime, along with other school officials, allegedly knew of the contaminated soil at least six months before the school was closed and cleanup began.
