Jersey City officials have launched a new online crime data dashboard designed to give residents real-time access to public safety information and improve transparency.
Mayor James Solomon, Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose and police officials announced the launch Thursday of the JC IMPACT Crime Data Portal, a public dashboard that provides 24/7 access to key crime data and neighborhood-level public safety information.
The portal is part of JC IMPACT, short for Integrated Metrics for Public Accountability and Community Trust, an initiative launched in March to help the city identify public safety concerns, respond more effectively and direct police resources where they are needed most.
Officials said the dashboard will allow residents to track crime trends while helping the Jersey City Police Department identify crime patterns, emerging concerns and repeat problem locations.
"The Crime Data Portal is a public accountability tool," Solomon said in a statement. "This portal is a direct response to residents' requests for greater transparency and real-time information, while also equipping our police department with data-driven tools to make smarter decisions about where resources are needed most."
Ambrose said the use of data allows police to deploy officers more effectively and address issues before they escalate.
City officials said the portal supports several public safety initiatives already underway, including data-driven police deployment, the rebuilding of the Traffic Division and Motorcycle Unit, upgrades to the city's 911 system launched in May, and the creation of official Jersey City Police Department social media accounts.
