Sailors are making the final touches on an unusual ship as they prepare to take a daring voyage from Jersey City to Spain.
The 12-member crew says the ship, the Abora III, is unsinkable. They built the ship with reeds, like the vessels used in ancient times. The European crew is hoping to show that a boat, made of reeds, could have made it to North America long before Columbus did.
?As a Norwegian, I have to state that before Columbus, about 500 years, the Vikings sailed to North America, but this sort of turns the pages several thousand years before that,? crew member Tormod Granheim said.
The journey begins in July, when the crew leaves from Jersey City. The voyage is expected to last approximately two months.
