A 5K scheduled for Saturday morning in Belmar and Lake Como was postponed because of police activity along the race route, according to organizers.

Belmar police and the Bradley Beach Police Department's K-9 unit were conducting a routine security sweep of the route and event staging areas when a police dog alerted to a vehicle within the event area.

Officers searched the vehicle and found no immediate threat to public safety, according to Belmar Police Chief Tina Scott. Police said the matter was resolved.

The Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh Pat Magovern 5K will instead be combined with the Lake Como Day 5K on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Registered participants can choose to join the Oct. 10 race, donate their registration fee or receive a $20 partial refund.

Organizers are asking participants to make their selection by 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. Those who do not respond by the deadline will automatically have their registration fee treated as a donation to the Shillelagh Foundation.
