GoFundMe pages have raised money for medical bills, charities and more -- so why not major infrastructure projects?
Started by a person using the moniker "Sad Jersey Commuter," a GoFundMe campaign is seeking to raise more than $920 million to replace the Portal Bridge.
"We, the residents, commuters, and visitors of New Jersey, are taking matters into our own hands," the page states. "We will no longer stand idly by and continue to suffer substandard public transportation."
The bridge over the Hackensack River between Kearny and Secaucus opens for maritime traffic. In extreme temperatures, the bridge is prone to closing incorrectly, often causing massive delays.
The page may be a joke, but by Saturday afternoon it had raised... $15.
