Drivers in Edison are encouraged to plan an alternate way to get back to work and school Tuesday.

Repairs to the water main break continue into Tuesday morning near the Raceway gas station on Travers Avenue.

Route 1 northbound is being directed onto Route 18 through New Brunswick, which caused traffic yesterday, and Route 1 south to Plainfield Avenue.

In addition, the Route 18 northbound ramp to Route 1 northbound is closed and detoured.

Edison Water Utility has been working on the repairs since 10 a.m. Monday.

Mayor Sam Joshi said the part of road sank three to four inches as a result of this water main break.

“These are extremely frigid, very rough conditions," said Mayor Sam Joshi. "There's freezing water running through this. You're talking about hundreds and hundreds of gallons per minute that are coming out, and everyone is working very hard right now. Route 1 is just a sheet of ice over here.”

This work expected to be competed at some point today.
