A winter storm coming through New Jersey this weekend is expected to greatly impact travel around the state.
Multiple inches of snow and ice are expected when the storm arrives early Sunday morning.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency to go into effect at 5 p.m. Saturday. She has also issued a commercial vehicle travel ban that will go into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday.
The governor has also asked New Jersey residents to limit their time on the roadways as much as possible to allow snowplows and emergency vehicles easier access.
AAA says that drivers should be alert if they must be out on the roads. The agency advises people to drive slowly. If they start to spin or skid, they are advised not to slam on the brakes.
AAA also advises:
- Not to power up hills. Hitting the gas on snow-covered roads just starts spinning wheels.
- Reduce speed down hills
- Keep gas tanks at least half full to prevent fuel from freezing
New Jersey Transit is also staying prepared for the storm. They are asking customers to only travel when necessary. Riders may notice temporary service suspension on Sunday and Monday. Customers should monitor the
NJ Transit website for the latest service information.
And area airports are also advising travelers that flights may be delayed or canceled. Several airlines are offering incentives to postpone trips. Many carriers are also waiving rebooking fees for a time.
Travelers are urged to check in with their airline before heading out to the airport.
