Two people were killed and two others were injured when a car and an SUV collided on Interstate 80 early Monday morning.

New Jersey State Police say the crash happened just after 2 a.m. at milepost 54.1 on the west side of the highway in Totowa.

They say that 30-year-old Newark resident Albin Fermin was driving in the wrong direction on the highway when he crashed head-on into the SUV. Police say that inside the SUV were 60-year-old Joanne Furmin, 24-year-old Imani Alexis Furman and a 2-year-old child.

Albin Fermin and Imani Alexis Furman were killed in the crash.

Joanne Furmin and the 2-year-old sustained “moderate injuries” and were taken to the hospital.

All lanes on I-80 West were closed for a time near the scene, but reopened around 6:45 a.m.

It was not immediately clear why Albin Fermin was driving on the wrong side of the highway.
