Robert White, the man accused of abusing 3-year-old Kyng Davis just weeks before the child died, pleaded not guilty to several assault charges during a court appearance in Brooklyn Supreme Court on Friday.
Six of White’s family members, including a child, were in the courtroom. Emotions ran high when the judge ordered White to remain in custody without bail.
White has not been charged in connection to Kyng’s death, but prosecutors said Friday that the charges could be upgraded once the medical examiner finalizes the child’s official cause of death.
According to a criminal complaint, White was arrested on March 11 in connection to an incident that took place on Feb. 22 inside a Brooklyn home.
A witness, identified as White's cousin, Nikita Nash, told police she saw him slap the child 10 times across the face. She reportedly stepped in to stop the attack.
Just over two weeks later on March 9, Kyng Davis was dropped off at SUNY Downstate Hospital unconscious and covered in bruises. He was later pronounced dead.
White, 38, has been charged with:
• Assault in the second degree
• Attempted assault in the second degree
• Assault in the third degree
• Endangering the welfare of a child
Court records show that White was in a relationship with Kyng’s mother at the time of the alleged assault.
White is due back in court in June.
