The killing of four bear cubs in a Passaic County town continues to cause alarm among residents.
Many Ringwood residents say they find the incident to be disturbing. It has been about a week since authorities announced charges filed against a 22-year-old resident accused of shooting the cubs. But some say that it is not enough.
“It’s kind of heinous if you think about killing four cubs,” said resident Richard Ebersbach at a town council meeting held on Tuesday.
The killing was the first topic to come up at the council meeting. But officials had no answers.
The Ringwood police chief read a statement saying he won't talk about the incident because it's not his case. He says state authorities are in charge since it happened in a state park.
Mayor Sean Noonan declined to comment.
State Fish and Wildlife officers charged Matt Ligus in connection to the killings. He faces thousands of dollars in fines for violations like hunting without a gun license, hunting with an illegal rifle and illegal ammo. He does not face any imprisonment for these crimes.
New Jersey recently reinstated the black bear hunt, which will begin next month. But bear cubs under 75 pounds are off limit.
It was not clear if the state is investigating the incident beyond the charges already reported.
