Record holiday travel is expected again in the Garden State this year.

AAA says 2.7 million New Jersey residents will travel 50 miles or more for the holidays. Experts say if Monday was your travel day, you should have hit the road already.

AAA predicted Sunday would be a travel day filled with delays, but News 12 crews ran into significant traffic on Monday as people were still trying to get out of town or complete their holiday errands.

Officials say that 90% of New Jersey residents will drive to their holiday plans, an increase of 2.1% compared to last year.

Travel experts say that drivers should avoid traveling during peak hours during the week when they can.

Hundreds of thousands of people are also expected to travel by air this season via New Jersey.

Newark Liberty International Airport was expecting 750,000 people to fly United Airlines during the holiday period. A whopping 9.9 million people are expected to fly countrywide from Dec. 19 - Jan. 6.

Air travelers are urged to arrive at the airport early and to contact their carriers to find out the status of their flights.
