An 18-year-old student was charged after police say he found a handgun that had been left unattended by a security guard at Lincoln Technical Institute in Paramus.

Paramus police said officers responded to the campus at Bergen Town Center around 11:40 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report that a security guard had allegedly left a firearm unattended and could not find it.

The campus was briefly placed on lockdown as a precaution while officers secured the area. Police said the lockdown was lifted shortly after and there was not believed to be an ongoing threat to students, staff or the public.

Investigators determined that a 53-year-old security officer from Oakland had inadvertently left his Glock 43 9mm handgun inside a stall in a men’s restroom around 9:20 a.m.

Police said they conducted interviews, reviewed surveillance footage and followed leads that identified a student who had found the gun and removed it from the property.

Detectives said Jayden Y. Combs, 18, of Elmwood Park, had taken the firearm. Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, police recovered the Glock from inside a school backpack in Elmwood Park.

Combs was charged with theft of lost property and possession of a weapon.
