Randolph Township is readying its roads for snow, but this year its Public Works Department is using a special money-saving mixture.
Bill Kerwick, a Public Works official, says brine is a mixture of rock salt and water used before a snowstorm arrives. According to Kerwick, the mixture creates a glaze that melts the snow once it hits the ground. Workers constantly work with brine to make sure the right amount of water and salt is mixed together.
Kerwick says since the department doesn?t use as much rock salt, the township saves money. He adds overtime costs are also reduced because much of the work can be done during regular business hours. Applying brine also has an environmental benefit because not that much granular product is put on the road.
