Multiple children consume suspected mushroom-laced edibles at East Orange YMCA summer camp, police say

Multiple children attending a summer camp at the East Orange YMCA consumed what appeared to be mushroom-laced edibles, police said.
Police responded to the YMCA at about 11 a.m. Thursday after receiving a report of the incident.
A preliminary investigation found that a camp counselor observed one camper distributing what appeared to be candy to other campers — an act prohibited under camp policy, according to police.
Shortly afterward, one of the children who had consumed a suspected edible complained of feeling unwell.
Twelve additional campers later reported experiencing similar symptoms.
The children who consumed the suspected edibles ranged in age from 10 to 13 and were evaluated at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
All were determined to be in stable condition. One child was transported to University Hospital as a precaution because of a preexisting medical condition, according to police.
A suspect has been identified, but no charges have been filed at this time.
"Our detectives are conducting a thorough investigation to determine exactly what occurred, how these suspected edibles came into the possession of a juvenile and whether any criminal offenses were committed," East Orange Police Chief Phyllis L. Bindi said. "We are working closely with our partners to ensure the safety of our youth and to hold anyone responsible accountable under the law."
