A Berlin Borough police officer helped deliver a baby boy after responding to a report of a woman in active labor inside a vehicle at a Wawa earlier this month, authorities said.

Officer Dominic Hodson was dispatched at about 8:21 p.m. on July 6 to the Super Wawa on Route 73, where a woman was in labor inside a vehicle, according to the Berlin Borough Police Department.

When Hodson arrived, he found the woman actively delivering the baby in the front passenger seat, police said.

Authorities said the officer assisted the baby's parents by lifting the newborn, clearing his mouth and nose to ensure there were no obstructions, and confirming he was breathing. The baby was breathing normally and crying, police said.

Hodson held the infant until emergency medical personnel arrived a short time later.

The mother, father and newborn boy were taken to Virtua Hospital in Voorhees for follow-up care.

"The family is all doing very well and I want to commend Officer Hodson for his professionalism [and] calm demeanor during a very stressful situation where he provided outstanding community caretaking to the public we serve," Berlin Police Chief Michael A. Scheer said in a statement provided by the department.
