The cornerstone of the Town of Riverhead's downtown revitalization efforts could get one step closer to reality when the town board holds a public hearing on the proposed Peconic River Hotel project tonight.

The proposal is for a five-story, 94-room boutique hotel on East Main Street as part of the ongoing downtown square project.

The entire hotel would be just shy of 70,000 square feet and include four floors of rooms, including 26 rooms on the second floor, 28 rooms on the third floor, 26 rooms on the fourth floor and 14 suites on the fifth floor.

The first floor would include a 116-seat restaurant and terrace, a coffee shop, retail spaces as well as the hotel reception and lobby, lounge, hotel kitchen and internal gym.

The project includes nine parking spaces underground, but notes that hotel guests would use valet service, which would park vehicles initially behind the Suffolk Theater and eventually at the proposed First Street Parking Garage, when built, and designated lots in the Riverhead Parking District.

The project requires special permits from the town to move forward.

This initiative is part of Riverhead's broader $33 million downtown revitalization work.

Over the last several years, the town has acquired several buildings, some vacant and others through eminent domain, to clear the way for this project.

The entire work is expected to include green spaces, an amphitheater, a public playground, walkways and mixed-use commercial spaces.

Tonight's meeting will take place at Riverhead Town Hall beginning at 6 p.m.
