Prosecutors probe Newark police shooting that killed 1, critically injured another
Prosecutors are investigating a shooting during a police pursuit in Newark that resulted in an officer fatally shooting one man and critically injuring another.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says a grand jury will be presented with the case following a review of the shooting, which occurred around 11:30 p.m. Monday.
Prosecutors say a preliminary investigation indicates that Newark police tried to stop a vehicle, but the driver didn't stop. They say "shots were fired by one police officer at three separate locations."
The two suspects shot by the officer, 35-year-old Andrew Dixon and 46-year-old Gregory Griffin, both of Newark, were taken to University Hospital.
Prosecutors say that Griffin died from his injuries Tuesday afternoon. Dixon remained in critical condition, according to officials.
A loaded semi-automatic handgun was found in the vehicle, according to officials.
Prosecutors say use of force is taken seriously and their professional standards bureau will review the evidence carefully.
