A Montclair police officer injured in a shootout Monday afternoon has been released from the hospital, according to officials.
The shooting happened just after 1 p.m. on the 100 block of Forest Street. The Essex County Prosecutor’s office says the officers were responding to reports of a woman armed with a weapon. The prosecutor says that when the officers arrived, they were met with gunfire.
Officer Michael Medrano, 33, was struck in the shoulder. Officials say another officer fired back and struck the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Maryann Swain.
Witnesses told News 12 New Jersey that they heard all the gunfire as it was happening. They said that there was also a child inside the home at the time of the incident. Witnesses say that a neighbor was able to take the child inside their home while it was all happening.
Medrano and Swain were taken to University Hospital for injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening. Officials say that Swain remains in the hospital.
Swain was charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Officials say she will be held at the Essex County Correctional Facility once she is released from the hospital.
