A former teacher at Steinert High School in Hamilton is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student when that student was a minor.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office charged Joseph DePuuglio, 76, with second-degree sexual assault and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
Authorities say that the victim, now an adult, reported the allegations to the Ewing Police Department at the end of 2022. The victim told police that the sexual activity took place between 1998 and 2000 at DePuglio’s home.
Officials say that DePuglio had supervisory and disciplinary power over the student at the time of the relationship.
DePuglio taught physics for 40 years and retired in 2008. News 12 has learned that he is also a music producer, vocalist and pianist. He has been awarded multiple times, including Physics Teacher of the Year by the Mercer County Engineers Society in 2000.
Anyone who might have additional information about this case is asked to contact Prosecutor’s Detective Jonathan White at 609-989-6399 or Ewing Detective Andrew Condrat at 609-882-1313 ext. 7583.
