A 27-year-old woman is in critical condition after police say her vehicle struck the rear of a tractor-trailer Sunday night in New Brunswick.

The crash happened at about 10:15 p.m. on Route 18 near Paulus Boulevard, according to a statement from New Brunswick police.

“The preliminary investigation suggests the driver of a motor vehicle struck the rear of a tractor-trailer near the intersection,” Capt. Amish Shah told News 12.

The driver of the car, a 27-year-old Parlin woman, sustained serious injuries. She was transported to a local hospital where she is listed in critical condition, Shah said. The tractor-trailer driver was not injured.

Police shut down lanes of Route 18 immediately following the crash while they investigated and cleared the scene. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
