A Barnegat man is facing charges for allegedly stabbing his parents to death inside a home on Lincoln Avenue.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office says officers were called to the home around 11 a.m. Officials say those officers found a man walking away from the home. They say the officer also found what appeared to be blood on the front door. Officers found the bodies of Eugene Mulgrew, 71, and Cheryl Mulgrew, 69, inside the home. The prosecutor says they were each stabbed in their upper torsos.
Officers later found the couple’s son, Michael Mulgrew, 34, walking near West Bay Boulevard and Gunning River Road. Officials say he matched the description of the man seen walking away from the Lincoln Avenue home. He was then taken into custody.
Michael Mulgrew was charged with two counts of murder, among other charges.
The incident put all Barnegat schools into a shelter-in-place status for a time as a precaution. The school shelter-in-place was lifted around 12:45 p.m. School officials say that students were able to continue their work in their classrooms throughout the incident.
