In closing arguments in the fraud trial of former Newark Mayor Sharpe James Monday, the prosecution accused James of abusing his position by putting personal interests ahead of the city.
James and his former mistress, Tamika Riley, stand trial on 13 counts of fraud and corruption.
U.S. Attorney Judy Germano argued James used his power to control city property sales and promote his affair with Riley. Prosecutors said evidence proves Riley was able to buy nine properties over four years at rock-bottom prices before flipping them for more than $650,000 in profits.
The defense will make its closing arguments Tuesday. The jury could begin deliberations as early as Wednesday.
