The frontrunners for the Republican and Democrat gubernatorial nominations are gearing up for what comes next as Tuesday's primaries near.
Chris Christie scored another big endorsement Thursday, this one from former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. He will then campaign Friday with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Christie is favored to shore up the nomination over former Bagota Mayor Steve Lonegan.
"New Jersey has tried liberal," says Romney. "It's tried more spending and more taxing to see if it can make New Jersey a more prosperous state, and it hasn't worked."
Gov. Jon Corzine is all but certain to win the Democratic nomination, and, as could be expected, has not put as much effort into campaigning. Corzine says he is concentrating more on governing than on running, at least until the budget is done this summer.
Polls show that both Christie and Steve Lonegan could defeat Corzine if the election was held now.
"We understand it's a reflection of the economy, where we are," says Joe Cyran, chair of the New Jersey Democratic Party. "Cutting people's programs never makes you popular. But people always understand if you [make the] right choices at [the] right time, they'll stand with you."
