The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced plans Tuesday to sink $2 billion into port improvements in Newark and Elizabeth, a move that would increase activity at the ports.
Part of the plans include deepening channels and upgrading roads around the ports. Port Authority officials say security will be increased as well. More surveillance cameras and better communication systems will be installed.
"We need a way to get goods to consumers in an efficient, timely manner," said Port Authority Chairman Anthony Coscia. "We?re well on the way to creating just that."
More than $600 million will also go toward improving the Port Authority?s rail system. Port Authority officials say improving the rail system will lead to less trucks on New Jersey roads.
