A graduation day surprise further cemented a bond between a father and son.
Pompton Lakes senior Nick Kearny thought that his father, Wayne Police Department Sgt. Kevin Kearny, would not be able to make his high school graduation because he was hospitalized for viral meningitis.
But Sgt. Kearny was able to get out of the hospital in time and showed up to surprise his son at the ceremony. It was a moment caught on video.
"I just broke down in tears of joys," says Nick Kearny. "Just seeing him made me really happy and I gave him probably the biggest hug ever."
"I broke down too and it was very emotional and I would do it all over again," says Sgt. Kearny. "I like surprises so it was nice to surprise him. And it's an overwhelming feeling."
The Kearnys tell News 12 New Jersey that they want to thank their family and friends for all the support they've received.
Nick Kearny will attend Montclair State University in the fall
