Rutgers University in New Brunswick was deemed safe after Police Department Communications Center received a bomb threat for various buildings on the College Avenue Campus on Thursday.
Chief Kenneth Cop said the initial investigation confirmed that the incident was likely the result of purposeful, non-credible threat known as “swatting.” The identity of the perpetrator is currently unknown and the investigation is ongoing, according to police.
In a statement via email to the Rutgers New Brunswick campus community, Cop says campus police and bomb detection dogs from the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office conducted searches of buildings on the College Avenue Campus. No bombs or suspicious devices were found.
Students said they received text notification alerts on their phones around 3:30 a.m. notifying them of the shelter-in-place.
News 12 New Jersey was told around 6 a.m. that the university was deemed safe after the shelter-in-place was issued.
